Eligibility & Applications
Who is eligible to receive an iPad?
We serve students in grades K-12 in the United States who have a documented visual impairment or blindness diagnosis. Families must provide documentation from a qualified eye care professional. Each application is reviewed individually to ensure we can best support the student's learning needs.
How do I apply for my child?
You can apply through our website by completing the online application form. You'll need to provide basic information about your child and their vision diagnosis. A parent or guardian must complete and submit the application on behalf of the student.
How long does the application process take?
Most applications are reviewed within 2–4 weeks. Once approved, devices are typically shipped within 1–2 weeks. The timeline may vary depending on application volume and the completeness of submitted documentation. We'll keep you informed throughout the process.
Devices & Program
How are devices selected and distributed?
Vision Nonprofit provides 13-inch iPads with built-in accessibility features because they offer the best combination of screen size, portability, and accessibility tools for students with low vision. Families apply through our website, and we review each application to ensure the child meets our eligibility criteria. Once approved, devices are shipped directly to families at no cost. We work with low-vision specialists to ensure the technology meets each student's needs.
How does technology help students with low vision?
Technology, especially tablets like iPads, offers powerful built-in accessibility features that help students with low vision succeed in school. Features like zoom magnification, larger text, high-contrast displays, and VoiceOver screen reading allow students to access the same educational materials as their peers. These tools help reduce eye strain, increase independence, and enable full participation in classroom activities.

Who do you partner with?
We partner with schools, teachers of the visually impaired (TVIs), low-vision specialists, and organizations that serve children with visual impairments. We also work closely with families to understand each child's unique needs. Our partnerships help us identify children who would benefit from assistive technology and ensure that devices are used effectively to support learning.
Low Vision Basics
What is low vision?
Low vision is a visual impairment that cannot be fully corrected with glasses, contact lenses, medication, or surgery. People with low vision may have difficulty with tasks like reading, recognizing faces, or navigating their environment. Low vision can result from conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, or congenital conditions like nystagmus.
What's the difference between low vision, visual impairment, and blindness?
Visual impairment is a broad term that includes any vision loss affecting daily activities. Low vision refers to significant vision loss that cannot be fully corrected but allows some functional sight. Blindness describes little to no usable vision. Vision Nonprofit primarily serves students with low vision and visual impairments who benefit from magnification, accessibility features, and assistive technology to support their learning.
