An iPad for Masen!

Joey and Masen

At Vision Nonprofit, we believe that every child deserves access to the tools they need to succeed—especially when it comes to education. Recently, we had the incredible joy of delivering an iPad, free of charge, to Masen, a bright and determined student whose journey with low vision has shaped his unique approach to learning.

Masen was diagnosed with optic nerve hypoplasia and septo-optic dysplasia at just six months old. He has been a Braille reader his entire life, using touch to navigate the world around him. While Masen has some usable vision in one eye, allowing him to see just a few inches in front of him, he relies heavily on technology to access information.

The Challenge of Learning Without the Right Tools

In school, Masen was provided with tactile graphics and raised diagrams to help him engage with visual content. But for complex subjects like science and math, this method had its limitations. Tracing a diagram with his hands didn’t always provide a full understanding of the image.

To adapt and overcome, Masen began using his iPhone to zoom in on content—but the small screen wasn’t ideal. When he had the chance to use a loaner iPad at school, he immediately noticed a huge difference. Being able to zoom in on an entire diagram, read text more easily, and interact with lessons in a way that made sense to him changed his learning experience.

But there was one problem: Masen needed an iPad of his own to continue learning at home and school. A newer-generation iPad was recommended, but the cost was a challenge.

The Power of Community: How Vision Nonprofit Helped

When Masen’s family reached out to Vision Nonprofit, they didn’t know what to expect. But thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters, we were able to not only provide Masen with an iPad—but deliver it to him that very weekend!

His mother shared how unexpected and impactful this moment was:

"When it was recommended to get an iPad to help in school, we were encouraged to reach out to Vision Nonprofit. We were shocked that they were not only able to provide Masen with an iPad, but could bring it to us that weekend."

That’s the heart of Vision Nonprofit. We work quickly to get technology into the hands of kids who need it most. We don’t want children waiting months or years for access—we want them to start learning, exploring, and thriving today.

To make the moment even more special, Joey, the inspiration behind Vision Nonprofit, created a heartfelt card for Masen to celebrate the occasion. Seeing Masen’s face light up as he opened the card and received his iPad was a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do.

Empowering Kids Through Technology

Now, with his own iPad, Masen can:
Access schoolwork more easily and engage with lessons like never before
Explore detailed diagrams and charts with clarity
Use the full screen and zoom functions to see content in a way that works for him
Continue learning at home and school without limitations

Masen’s family expressed their deep gratitude, sharing:

"We are so appreciative and grateful for the generosity of an iPad to give our son such a great tool to use, not just in the classroom, but at home as well."
